Esther 'Tokyo' Bello is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher who works with systems of knowledge generation and the ways digital technologies – particularly generative AI – shape the documentation and understanding of communities and their social histories. She is particularly interested in ideas around indigenous and non-western epistemologies, investigating how their approaches to knowledge can inform the development of alternative frameworks for data and information within AI ecosystems. Her practice spans abstract painting, filmmaking, and dataset creation as part of art practice, integrating cutting edge technologies into traditional art practices.
Bello holds an MSc in Creative Technology and a BSc in Information Technology and Business Information Systems from Middlesex University, London. She is currently pursuing a PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London in Arts and Computational Technology. She was an artist-in-residence at the Tate Modern’s Tech, Tea + Exchange program (2025), culminating in a group exhibition in the gallery.
Bello lives and works in London.
